Because Pratt is a professional school, the Career Services Office with its thousands of connections to employers is an invaluable resource to all our students and alumni. Career Services provides outstanding service to students and alumni, providing them with assistance in portfolio development, resume writing, and job placement. Services are available online as well as in the office, with employer listings online as well as workshops and advice.
Counselors are always available to meet with students to discuss job search strategies, job search tools such as resume and portfolio, and career aspirations. The office works with alumni from recent grads to alumni nearing retirement in order to help them maximize their career success.
Visit PrattTalent to view recent student work as well as faculty and alumni work. Organized by major, this site showcases the extraordinary talent of Pratt's students, faculty, and alumni, and it serves as a source of talent for employers all over the country.
An internship is a form of experiential learning. You are placed at a job site according to your interests and learn on the job.
It should be a combination of practicing skills you already have and learning new ones. In some cases, internships can lead to further professional opportunities, but in every case it is a great way to gain experience, meet new people, and build your career network.
Because internships are considered learning experiences, it is also a good way to assess your strengths and weaknesses. As an intern, you are able to test your career goals and explore your options before entering as a professional.
At Pratt, the internship program is an academic experience, where students receive credits based on the number of contact hours at the internship site and department policy. Your internship experience will likely be accompanied by a seminar or a series of structured meetings.
To intern, you must be a junior or senior.
The internship site through career services provides you with everything you need to know about internship opportunities at Pratt.

Internationally recognized as one of the leading professional schools of art, design, and architecture in the country, Pratt Institute offers a wide variety of majors for undergraduates in art, design, and architecture, as well as a creative writing program and a program in critical and visual studies in our School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. At the graduate level, Pratt has long been recognized for the strength of its art, design, architecture, and information and library science programs. Take a minute and browse through our majors at www.pratt.edu
Pratt provides students with an outstanding professional education and a traditional residential college experience within the exciting creative environment of one of the pre-eminent art schools in the US. Pratt receives almost twice as many applications as any other art school in the country with over 5000 applications for 645 freshman spots.
Pratt students tend to know early in life that they enjoy and are good at making art, building things, or writing. Some find out later that they are "good in art" or that they write well. But almost all are certain that they want to lead a creative life working in a field they love.
Pratt's location is ideal, on a 25-acre campus with five residence halls in a residential neighborhood just 25 minutes from the art center of the world, Manhattan. And although New York and Pratt may be intimidating at first, students quickly realize that this is an opportunity to learn from the best, to work alongside other students who were the best in their high school or college, and to develop their craft in an inspirational setting.
Rankings
Pratt's graduate interior design program was ranked number one in the country by both US News and DesignIntelligence. Industrial design was ranked third. Pratt's undergraduate interior design program was ranked 2nd nationally for the sixth straight year in the 2009 survey published by DesignIntelligence,a journal for professional designers. Industrial design was ranked 6th. Architecture was ranked ninth in 2008. Although US News no longer ranks undergraduate art programs in its specialty art schools section, it can be useful to check acceptance rates, 25-75th percentiles for SAT scores, retention rates, etc. as well as to see the listing of all the specialty art schools. Pratt is among the most selective schools in that list.
Top Three Reasons Students Choose Pratt
(1) A distinguished faculty of practicing artists, designers, architects, writers, and librarians, many of whom have received awards for their work and are leaders in their fields. Often it's faculty connections that land you your internship and eventually your first job whether it's directly through your instructors or through our Career Services Office. Pratt's professors are working professionals who take time off from their successful careers to teach, mentor, and help students find internships and eventually jobs. Google any professor's name at Pratt, and you'll find that he or she is at the forefront of contemporary art, design, architecture, writing, or library science. Ask students why they chose Pratt, and invariably they will say, "the faculty." The fact that Pratt is one of the largest art schools means that you get to choose from hundreds of faculty and courses. Classes are small so that you can work alongside your professors, receiving feedback on your work, advice about your strengths, and an education focused on your own interests.
(2) The professional nature of the curriculum which starts in the first year as opposed to a traditional liberal arts college where you choose your major in the third year. Because of Pratt's size, you get to choose from an extraordinary variety of majors and concentrations including majors in creative writing and critical and visual studies. Read about Pratt's programs at www.pratt.edu (Areas of Study)
More about Pratt's Curriculum
Pratt has always believed that educating generalists rather than specialists (Industrial designers rather than car designers, writers rather than journalists) is essential in supporting our mission: to educate creative individuals to be leaders in their fields. The fact that this philosophy is reflected in the professional world with the boundaries between various art forms disappearing confirms this approach.
(3) The Campus: Pratt is the only East Coast art school with an enclosed campus. Twenty-five acres of tree-lined bricked roadways, grassy areas, five residence halls on campus, and outstanding facilities offer students plenty of "green space" in which to work, relax, and spend time with friends.
Careers in Art and Design
For useful information on life after art school, visit the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design at
http://www.aicad.org/career.htm
The contemporary sculpture garden on campus, ranked among the top 20 in the country, is a popular draw for visitors and provides students with the extraordinary opportunity to live with an ever changing display of contemporary sculpture.
All undergraduate prospective students are invited to visit Pratt, talk with a counselor, have work reviewed, and tour the campus. Make sure you also get your own VIP (virtual interest page) so we can send you information targeted to your interests.
Make sure you check the calendar for a list of events.
For more information on visiting, click on the links below.
There are other ways to get to know Pratt. Each fall, Pratt's admissions counselors travel throughout the US attending National Portfolio Days and scheduling individual appointments/portfolio reviews with students and families. These are scheduled in hotels by appointment.
Merit-based scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students.
Undergraduate: Freshmen merit awards are based on the portfolio, GPA and SAT scores. Architecture merit awards are based only on GPA and test scores. Merit scholarships range from $5,000 to 15,000 annually provided students maintain a 2.5 GPA. Students who file the FAFSA and qualify for financial aid received need-based aid in addition to the scholarship. Transfer scholarships are based on portfolio and college GPA.
Graduate Scholarships: scholarships are awarded by the program department upon acceptance. A small number are available to second year students as well as graduate assistantships and restricted and endowed scholarships. The first-year graduate scholarships range from $1,000 to 13,000 for one-year. They are not renewable automatically.
All merit-based scholarships are awarded automatically based on merit. There is no application process.
International scholarships: international students are eligible for our international scholarships, which range from $3,000 to $10,000 a year for four or five years at a savings of up to $50,000. International students do not qualify for need-based aid.
Net Cost
In considering colleges, it is important to understand whether the schools you are looking at award merit scholarships in addition to need-based aid. Pratt has a generous merit-based scholarship program. Three out of five freshmen at Pratt receive a merit scholarship ranging from $6,000 to $15,000 (architecture) or $13,000 (other programs) a year for a total savings of up to $$75,000 over four years.

Deferring admission
Undergraduate
Accepted freshmen who wish to defer entrance for one year (same semester) must write a letter of request or email to William Swan, Associate Director of Recruitment, at wswan@pratt.edu. Pratt will grant freshman requests for deferral for one year. Freshmen who defer their admission may not attend another college for credit in the meantime. If they do, they must request consideration for admission as a transfer student.
Transfer requests for deferral are not granted. Transfers may request that their application be reactivated (reconsidered for admission) the following year.
Spring entrance is not an option for freshman applicants to the BFA programs. Only associate’s degree and construction management programs accept freshmen for spring.
If a student is permitted to defer enrollment to a later semester, he/she still must submit an enrollment deposit of $200 to hold the spot. Scholarships and financial aid awards will be re-evaluated and may change for the new semester to which the student is deferring.
Graduate
Graduate students may defer for one year and should contact Young Hah at yhah@pratt.edu to request deferral. An enrollment deposit is required as well.

The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) provides an opportunity for admission and support to talented New York students who have not reached their full academic potential due to barriers in their educational, economic, or personal background.
HEOP Students are Pratt students. They attend the same classes, live in the same residence halls, participate in the same extracurricular activities, have access to the same resources, and pursue the same careers as other Pratt students. HEOP provides additional supportive services designed to assist students with academic, financial, social and personal matters. This includes tutoring, counseling, and financial aid for students throughout their college careers.
The ultimate goal of the program is to make higher education possible for students who are inadmissible under regular admissions guidelines, but who have the potential and motivation for academic success. Students who are reviewed and found not admissable must also meet the following guidelines.
Admission Requirements:
U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident
Resident of New York State
Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
First-time college applicant
Inadmissible to Pratt under regular admission guidelines
Demonstrate the academic potential for satisfactory completion of a degree program
Meet New York State’s HEOP income guidelines
Attend mandatory six week summer enrichment program

The National Portfolio Day Association (NPDA) was created solely for the organization and planning of National Portfolio Days. Since 1978, NPDA members have been hosting portfolio days and career-in-the-arts events throughout the country. The Association consists of accredited art colleges and university art departments which are members of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. It is the only organization of its kind, and its membership represents the highest standard of visual arts education available in the United States.
The National Portfolio Day at Pratt is a chance for you to show the best of your creative work to faculty and admissions representatives from over 50 of the most prestigious art and design schools in the United States. It's an opportunity to have your portfolio critiqued by experienced college representatives. (Some colleges may accept the portfolio you present as the visual portion of your application.) You'll also be able to discuss your work, your college plans, and your concerns and obtain information about the colleges in which you're interested. Bring your original artwork in two- and three-dimensional formats. You can include work in-progress, sketch books and tear sheets.
National Portfolio Days serve a variety of purposes. Most importantly, they help further the artistic development of young artists by bringing together experienced college representatives to review your work and offer critique. You will hear many different opinions about your work. Do not hesitate to explain how you develop your ideas, and where you want to go with them.
It is understood that some people make certain kinds of art more successfully than others. Do not be discouraged if you see work that is "better" than yours. A National Portfolio Day may be the first time you have seen so many people in one place who all share a powerful commitment to the arts. This experience is a small taste of what attending a professional art program can be like. We hope you will enjoy the intensity of the experience.
National Portfolio Days are also about the exchange of information: about your work, yourself, your college plans, your concerns. They are not an examination or a competition. The college representatives are pleased to discuss their programs with you. Of course they can be most helpful when discussing your work, but it can also include works in progress, sketch books and tear sheets. Do not spend an inordinate amount of time matting or framing your work, or worrying about the presentation. The work itself is what is of interest.
No admissions decisions or scholarship awards will be offered to you at a National Portfolio Day. Some colleges represented may accept the portfolio you present as the visual portion of your application. Other colleges have review structures which prohibit them from making a definitive portfolio decision at the time of your review. All expect your art to progress in the coming months. We urge you to discuss your work with as many representatives as possible.
If you're planning a visit to Pratt, try this website to plan your trip. It includes information on museums, performing arts, Broadway shows, restaurants, events, transportation by bus, subway, cab, weather and much much more.
