The M.S. in Facilities Management prepares individuals to assume executive responsibilities in the management of facilities and equipment as assets and to ensure a quality environment and cost-effective investment. The degree requires the completion of 45 credits of course work and a five-credit demonstration of professional competence for a total of 50 credits. Students entering the program with prior professional experience or graduate work in related fields may be eligible for advanced standing. (Up to 12 credits may be waived). The core courses include the basic lecture and seminar courses and a demonstration of professional com- petence requirement. All Facilities Management courses are taught in Manhattan, Monday through Thursday evenings. Additional elective courses are available through the graduate programs in City and Regional Planning, Architecture, Historic Preservation, Urban Environmental Systems Management, Library and Information Science, and Interior Design.


Special Admission Requirements

Applicants for admission to the Master of Science in the Facilities Management program must submit an essay and a separate statement of purpose to support the application for advanced studies.
The essay should indicate an interest in or an awareness of issues addressed in the Facilities Management program. Undergrad-uate degrees in architecture,
construction management, and engineering fields are considered preferable for admission. Applicants receiving a bachelor’s degree in other fields are also
eligible but may be required to take noncredit courses in technical subjects prior to registering for required courses.

Harriet Markis, Facilities Management Chair


The Facilities Management program, which is an IFMA accredited program, was launched in 1991 as a new area of expertise supporting communities, corporations, and institutions in systematic planning for growth and change.

Pratt's Master of Science in Facilities Management is a two-year program. The first year of study emphasizes development of key competencies including: project management, organizational performance and effectiveness measures, managing real estate as an asset, property acquisition and disposal, facility maintenance and operations, and environmental, health, safety, security and life-safety issues.

The second year curriculum further develops the breadth of awareness, comprehension and analysis of facilities management. These studies stress: ethical and legal responsibilities, strategic and master planning, economic evaluation of facilities, telecommunications, and computer applications for facilities management.

The culmination of students' work is an integrative and problem-solving skills course, Demonstration of Professional Competence. Students apply analytical abilities and develop a professional quality report and presentation reviewed by invited professionals.

He has been responsible for providing staff, as well as business and technology consulting for numerous Fortune 500 companies. Professional Achievements Mr. Olson was a member of the American Institute of Architects and a former board member of the Long Island Chapter. He has also served on the board and chaired the Education Committee for the International Facilities Management Association. Mr. Olson has been a featured speaker at the Greater New York Construction User Council - annual Technology Conference, the Architectural Board of Ohio, and the Building Owners and Managers Association of New York. Mr. Olson was awarded the IFMA 2002 Educator of the Year Award. William Henry has over 30 years experience in the information technologies (IT) industry. Prior to founding MillenniuM II Consulting Group, Inc. in 1997, Mr. Henry was Managing Principal of HENREY Consultants, Inc., a full service IT consultancy that he co-founded in 1994. From 1987 to 1994, Mr. Henry was employed at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company where, as Director of Corporate Telecommunications, he was responsible for developing and facilitating global strategies for the company's data, image, video and voice telecommunications functions. A former military officer, Mr. Henry began his career with AT&T Long Lines where he worked in various management positions within the engineering, operations and marketing departments. In 1982, he joined AT&T Information Systems where he held positions of increasing responsibility. As a Technical Account Manager within the National Securities Branch Office, Mr. Henry facilitated systems assurance procedures and overall project management coordination. His responsibilities also included designing and implementing complex voice and data systems and networks for financial industry national accounts. Mr. Henry is actively involved in working with inner-city youth. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of Catholic Big Brothers since 1990 and is currently a member of its Executive Committee. In 1995, Mr. Henry joined the faculty at Pratt Institute. He is presently a Visiting Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture where he teaches students who are enrolled in the Graduate Facilities Management Program. Prior to his affiliation with Pratt Institute, Mr. Henry was a guest lecturer on information technology issues at the NYU Graduate Management Center. He has a BA from New York University and has attended the Advanced Information Systems Institute at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
