Pratt to Honor Marc Jacobs, David Rockwell and Patti Smith

Pratt Institute will present Legends 2009, a scholarship benefit honoring fashion designer Marc Jacobs; architect and designer David Rockwell; and iconic performer, poet, and visual artist Patti Smith on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 7 World Trade Center, 250 Greenwich Street in Manhattan. The event begins with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m. followed by a dinner and awards ceremony and special performance by Patti Smith. Tickets are required for entry.

Digital Arts Graduates Receive National Recognition

Alek Vacura and Taylor Cook, both 2009 graduates from Pratt’s Department of Digital Arts, were awarded first and second place in the animation category of an international juried student exhibition of computer graphics and digital arts. Their work, along with the work of four other students from the department, will be on display as part of the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Graphics and Interactive Techniques (SIGGRAPH) 2009 conference in New Orleans from Monday, August 3 through Friday, August 7.

Pratt Sculpture Park Features New Work

Pratt Institute recently installed three sculptures as part of Agnieszka Gradzik and Wiktor Szostalo’s “Treehugger Project” in its outdoor Sculpture Park, which stretches across Pratt’s 25-acre Brooklyn Campus and is the largest in New York City. Other recent additions include a light canopy by Pratt architecture students and a sculpture on the impact of war on human lives by Martha Walker.

Pratt Programs Highly Ranked by U.S. News & World Report

Pratt Institute Department of Interior Design was recently ranked number one in the country by U.S. News & World Report in its 2009 guide to America’s Best Graduate Schools, published in March 2008. Pratt industrial design, graphic design, and master of fine arts degree programs were ranked fourth, ninth, and fifteenth, respectively.

Pratt Programs Top National Design Survey

Pratt's graduate program in interior design was ranked first in the country, based on surveys completed by industry professionals. Undergraduate interior design, graduate and undergraduate industrial design, and undergraduate architecture programs were ranked 2, 3, 6, and 12, respectively.

New Faculty Orientations in Brooklyn and Manhattan

Pratt Institute will present its 2009 New Faculty Orientation on the Brooklyn Campus in the Library's Alumni Reading Room from 9 AM to 4 PM on Thursday, August 27. For those unable to attend in Brooklyn, an abbreviated session will occur on the Manhattan Campus on the 2nd Floor from 3 PM to 6 PM on Wednesday, September 2. Award-Winning Work by Digital Arts Grad Shown on Design Blog

Recent digital arts graduate Alek Vacura was interviewed in an August 3 Motionographer design blog post. In it, Vacura praised Pratt for its program, its national reputation, and its location in New York City. His award-winning thesis work, titled "Without Arms," is also available for viewing.

Pratt Center for Continuing and Professional Studies (CCPS) Gallery will present “Courthouse Confessions – In Their Own Words,” a photography exhibition of work by CCPS instructor and longtime photojournalist Steven Hirsch. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, runs from August 31 – September 29, 2009.

Pratt Institute’s Media Arts Department has been renamed the Film/Video and Photography Department, effective July 1, 2009. The department, which is one of 15 degree programs within the Institute’s School of Art and Design, is located on Pratt’s Brooklyn campus.

Pratt Center for Continuing and Professional Studies (CCPS) Gallery will present “Eye on the Strand,” a group exhibition that features the work of the three winners and 20 finalists of Pratt, the Aperture Foundation, and Strand Book Store’s first-ever photography contest. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, will run from July 15 – August 26, 2009 and will include creative photo representations of the Strand Book Store.

Pratt Institute President Thomas F. Schutte and The Board of Trustees of Pratt Institute will hold a dinner to celebrate the establishment of The Marc Rosen Distinguished Visiting Chair in Design on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at The Gramercy Park Hotel Roof at Two Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. The event will include a cocktail reception at 7 p.m. followed by dinner, and will celebrate the first endowed professorship in the history of Pratt Institute.

Pratt Institute department of fine arts graduate students Charlotte Meyer and Kris Scheifele won 2009 Joan Mitchell Fellowship Awards for their accomplishments in sculpture and painting, respectively. Through this award program, Meyer and Scheifele will each receive a $15,000 grant and will also participate in a group exhibition at the Cue Art Foundation in Chelsea, New York in spring of 2010.
